The SALT. Colorado 58 is a square aviator in aerospace-grade Japanese titanium, shown here in rose gold with an antique rose acetate insert and polarized CR-39 lenses. The square aviator is one of the longest-serving shapes in eyewear — it earned its reputation as military-issue flying glasses and has changed remarkably little since, because the geometry works on nearly every face.
What SALT. does differently is the insert. A 1mm ring of acetate seats the lens inside the titanium rim rather than letting metal grip glass or resin directly. It protects the lens edge, adds rigidity to a very thin frame, and gives the design a second color to work with — here a soft antique rose against the rose gold metal.
Titanium is the reason the frame weighs almost nothing. It also means the temples hold an adjustment rather than relaxing over a season the way a spring-hinged metal frame does. The organic SALT. pattern is stamped into the inside of the temple tips and the nose pads, which is as much function as branding — the texture grips skin and keeps the frame from creeping down.
Lenses
Polarized CR-39, with SALT. anti-reflective, hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings applied to both the front and back surfaces. Front-and-back AR is not standard at this tier: rear-surface coating is what kills the reflection you see in your own lens when light is behind you. The hydrophobic and oleophobic layers shed water and skin oil, so the lens cleans with a wipe instead of a scrub. SALT. lenses meet US FDA impact standards.
Fit
58mm eye, 17mm bridge, 145mm temple. Two further numbers on the spec are worth knowing: a 47mm B measurement, which is the vertical depth of the lens, and a 66mm effective diameter — the widest distance across the lens. The ED figure is what an optician uses to decide whether a given prescription can be cut into a frame without distortion at the edges, so it matters if you're ordering these with Rx. The Colorado is also made in a 55mm eye for narrower faces.
